May     1/24      FK stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. This is 48 days since both have arrived and still no eggs. We have a hypothesis on what is causing the egg delay or no eggs this year. Observations show FK and MK are eating frogs and small birds this year, more than all other years combined. Which to us means a shortage of voles and mice. FK must feel there is not adequate food to sustain a family. Food availability will limit capacity for FK to produce eggs. Only time will tell. 5:49am FK awake and preening. 6:012am FK back to sleep. 6:03am FK in door. 6:06am FK on nearby hydro wire. 6:19am FK and MK on nearby hydro wire. 6:32am FK gone, MK still on hydro wire. 6:55am MK and FK now not in research area. Unfortunately the above observations will be the last unless something of significance changes. FK and MK are spending more time away from the research area, fewer copulations and protection of research area has diminished as the days go by. They spend time together as a bonding ritual. FK also enjoys sleeping in the H.M.K.T. nest box. We will keep watching

We have done some research about the vole population in our area. With the help of Dr. James Duncan (scientist) this is the resulting reasons why the vole population is in a major decline . The scientific literature documents that in patchy habitat areas with many generalist predators (fox, cats, coyotes owls etc.) voles do not vary much from year to year.  Rather spring and fall weather have a greater effect on their numbers. Extended periods of wet cold (below freezing) weather with less than 10cm of insulative snow cover can wipe out or drive down local numbers. This verifies lack of vole population due to cold fall with no snow, lack of snow past winter and cold spring with lack of snow. So in closing the Kestrel will be counting on birds as their main diet this 2024 season. In conclusion, Kestrels in our research area will be depending on birds as their main diet with supplements such as frogs and assorted insects.

June    09/24      FK and 5 nestlings stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. 5:24am FK out on door branch then gone. 5:29am FK back with food, feeding time for 5 nestlings. FK out again and at 5:50am FK back with food, feeding time. 5:59am FK out with leftovers and stores them, then on nearby hydro wire then back in on 5 nestlings. 7:45am MK on KP #4, flies to nearby evergreen and gets stored food. FK out on door branch, MK delivers food and FK in feeding 5 nestlings. 7:52am Feeding over, FK out on door branch and back in on 5 nestlings. 9:01am FK out, MK looks in and gone then FK back in on 5 nestlings. 10:15am FK out and back in with vole feeding 5 nestlings. 10:24am Feeding over, FK out with leftovers and gone then at 10:25am back in on 5 nestlings. 11:44am FK out and gone. MK in with baby bird, leaves it and out. 11:48am FK in with vole feeding 5 nestlings. During the nestlings feeding MK in and out of nest box box three times and leaves a grub each time. 11:56am Feeding over, FK out with leftovers and gone. 11:58am FK back in, takes baby bird out and gone. 12:00pm MK in with grub, tries to feed it to a nestling then out with grub and gone. FK in. 12:45pm MK delivers vole to FK on H.M.K.T., FK in feeding 5 nestlings. 12:53pm Feeding over, FK out with leftovers and gone then back in on 5 nestlings. 1:18pm MK delivers grub at door, FK eats it. 1:30pm until 3:28pm MK delivers at door, inside and on H.M.K.T. a total of eight grubs that FK feeds to 5 nestlings. 3:28pm FK out and gone then at 3:31pm back in with food feeding 5 nestlings. 3:38pm Feeding over, FK in on 5 nestlings. 4:09pm MK on H.M.K.T., FK out and gone then MK follows. 4:17pm FK in on 5 nestlings. 4:29pm MK on H.M.K.T. with food. FK out, gets it and gone MK follows. 4:32pm FK in with bird feeding 5 nestlings. 4:42pm FK out with leftovers and gone then at 4:45pm back in on 5 nestlings. 5:38pm FK takes a break out of nest box returning at 5:58pm. 6:04pm until 8:33pm FK fed 5 nestlings three times and out with leftovers once then back in. 9:36pm FK still on 5 nestlings asleep.

June    10/24      FK and 5 nestlings stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. Did not see FK leave nest box but was back 5:24am with food, feeding time. 6:30am feeding time. 6:40am Feeding over, FK out and gone. MK on KP #4. 6:44am FK back in on 5 nestlings. 7:48am FK out and at 7:51am back in on 5 nestlings. 8:28am FK out and gone. 8:36am FK in with food, feeding time until 8:45am then FK out with leftovers and at 9:00am back in. 9:28am FK still on nestlings. 11:18am FK on 5 nestlings. 11:34am MK drops off grub with FK then FK out on door branch and gone. 11:39am MK in four times delivering grubs to nestlings. 12:00pm FK in on 5 nestlings. 12:10pm FK out and at 12:29pm back in. 12:31pm MK on door branch twice with grub. FK feds grubs to nestlings then out. 12:36pm until 3:38pm FK feeds nestlings a vole and two grubs. FK takes a couple of 20 minute+ breaks out of nest box. 3:42pm FK in with food, feeding time until 3:45pm then FK out. 3:47pm MK in twice delivering grubs to nestlings. 4:27pm FK in with food, feeding time until 4:35pm then FK out. 4:42pm FK in on 5 nestlings. 4:51pm until 7:17pm FK takes seven short breaks out of nest box and on one return with food feeding 5 nestlings. 8:13pm FK out and in with food, feeding time until 8:25pm then FK on 5 nestlings. 9:05pm FK out and gone then at 9:11pm back in on 5 nestlings. 9:35pm FK still on 5 nestlings asleep.
