Wood ducks are called wood ducks because they nest and roost in trees, specifically in tree cavities near water, rather than on the ground like most ducks. They possess sharp, strong claws on their webbed feet, which allow them to perch, climb bark, and maneuver through dense, wooded forests.  These ducks are often found in deciduous forests, and their habitat  preference is so specific that they will also readily use artificial  nest boxes placed near trees. Females typically lay seven to fifteen eggs which are incubated for an average of thirty days. However, females may  lay eggs in the nests of their neighbors, which may lead to nests with  thirty eggs or more, a behavior known as  "nest dumping".

NOTE: Ma Wood Duck covers here eggs when she is not in the nest box. When she leaves we uncover the eggs for photos and then cover them back up.

Cooler weather is keeping Ma Wood Duck in the nest box longer.  Her leave time is very short so we can not inspect the nest box for an updated egg count.
