March   9/22     We have installed the K-2 nest box and its 1 HD Camera. We tried installing the 2nd camera and the cable snapped in the extreme cold.

March   18/22   We have installed the 2nd camera and are ready for the Kestrels arrival.    Click here for hypothesis.

 We have ordered a new cable and will install 2nd camera when it arrives.

March   19/22   We helped install 2 nest boxes built by the youth of the WILD OUTSIDE program from The Canadian Wildlife Federation. Snow was very deep

and getting to the trees from the open fields was very difficult.  Click here for photos

March   21/22   About 9:55 am. has spotted a Kestrel hovering over our research area. Still huge amounts of snow in research area.

March   22/22   About 10:36 am. FK. Lady Winnipeg has arrived. She perched on the H.M.K.T. and entered the nest box. Our 2022 season has officially started.

FK. has been in the immediate area most of the day and evening. She has been sitting on near by trees and the H.M.K.T. About 7:47 pm. FK. entered the H.M.K.T. nest box did some preening. Then she tucked in for the night.

March   23/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. At 6:51 am. FK. was awake. 6:56 am. she was in the door for 1 minute them sat on the door branch.

until 7:03 am. and then flew away. FK. spent the day sitting on her favorite hunting perches and entering the H.M.K.T. nest box. 5:58 pm. FK. entered the K-2 nest box and did a little scrapping then out. 7:35 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box scrapping then out and sits on door branch of          

March   24/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:55 am.FK. gone from H.M.K.T. nest box and proceeds to do her daily routine of sitting on her

favorite hunting areas. There is overland flooding and still 3 feet of snow in some of the research area. 7:47 am. FK. coughs up a pellet which means she is eating. Went to area and found 2 pellets at 1 of her hunting perches. 7:12 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box scraping. 7:36 pm. she is preening for about 10 minutes then goes to sleep.

March   25/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:51 am. she is awake. Snow storm with high winds. 6:56 FK. out of nest box and on H.M.K.T.

but can't hang on 6:59 she is back in the H.M.K.T. nest box waiting out the storm. FK. 7:36 am. she is in the door 7:38 am. FK. flies to a favorite perch. The after a short stay she flies away and we did not see her until 5:52 pm. in and out H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:57 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box scraping then sits out on door branch. 7:01 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box preening then to sleep.

March   26/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. FK. awoke at 6:58 am. 7:05 am. out and on door branch until 7:06 am. then flew towards nearby park.

7:30 am. FK. on 1 of her favorite telephone pole perches then at 8:00 am. she was gone. Did not see her all day. 5:00 pm. Fk. on tele pole perch.     5:02 pm. FK. in K-2 nest box, quick scape and out, flies to nearby tree. 6:06 pm. still on nearby tree. 7:14 pm. she flies to and in H.M.K.T/. nest box and preens. 7:22 pm. FK. asleep.

March   27/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. &;00 am. FK. awake and in door. then gone. 7:23 am. FK. on nearby tree and other hunting spots.

March   28/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:49 am. FK. awake and preening.6:52 am. in door of H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:53 am. she is out on door

branch. 6:59 am. FK. flies and sits in  one of her favorite trees. 7:29 am. FK. gone from area.  2:00 pm. MK. arrives and sits on H.M.K.T. FK. inside H.M.K.T. nest box bowing and calling to MK. MK. looks in at FK. She flies out of nest box and 2:45 pm. copulation occurs and again at 2:58 pm. MK. wasting no time for romance. Then both sit on H.M.K.T. Mk. and FK. in and out of nest box several times today. 3:48 pm. 6:00 pm. and 7:29 pm. copulation occurs. 7:50 pm. FK. proceeds to enter nest box. She is tucked in for the night. 8:05 pm. MK. enters H.M.K.T. nest box and is brutally attacked by FK.  8:10 pm. MK. is out and then goes in again and is attacked again. Mk. out and sits on door branch of H.M.K.T. until 8:14 pm. 9:36 am. she has gone from area. 5:25 pm. FK. returns to research area and sits on a nearby tree. 5:41 pm. FK. in K-2 nest box scrapping, then out and sits on nearby tree. 7:35 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box scrapping, preening , then to sleep.

March   29/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:48 am. FK. in door 6:50 am. she is out and sits on H.M.K.T. 7:01 am. she is gone. 8:14 FK. back on

H.M.K.T. 8:17 am. FK in and out of nest box and then sits on door branch. FK. and MK. hunting on several different perches in our research area throughout the day. Several copulations have been noted. 3:02 pm. we spot FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box and perches in our research area with some type of kill (hard to tell what it is). Both also have been in and out of K-2 and H.M.K.T. nest boxes several times. 7:12 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box scrapped and then to sleep. MK. in and out of K-2 nest box and on near by tree. 8:00 pm. MK. gone from area, FK. asleep in H.M.K.T. nest box.

March   30/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:53 am. FK. awake 7:11 am. she is in the door 7:18 am. FK. out of nest box and sits on nearby

March   31/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:52 am. FK. gone from nest box. 7:14 am. FK. and MK. on nearby tree. 7:57 am. MK. in H.M.K.T.

perches. 7:27 am. MK. and FK. sit in nearby tree. Both have in and out of K-2 and H.M.K.T. nest boxes and sitting on several perches all day. 7:30 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box MK. in and out of K-2 nest box. 7:55 pm. MK. looks in H.M.K.T. nest box wakes FK. up. FK. starts to call and bow then MK flies away for the night.

April       1/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 5:34 am. FK. awake and preening and back to sleep. 6:40 am. FK. in door 6:45am. FK. gone. 7:00 am.

April      2/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:50 am. FK. awake. 6:54 am. FK. in door. 6;56 am. FK flies to and sits on a favorite perch. 7:13 am.

MK. in K-2 nest box srapping and calling. 7:09 am. FK. on wire and then 7:22 am. in and out K-2 nest box then both sit on nearby trees. MK. and FK. sit on nearby perches, in and out of both nest boxes and leave research area & back all day. 8:04 pm. MK. looks in at FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box FK. calling and bowing then MK. on H.M.K.T. 8:15 pm. MK. flies away. Fk. in H.M.K.T. nest box trying to cough-up pellet the to sleep.

FK. and MK. on a favorite tree. Today FK. and MK. perched on several favorite places in and out both nest boxes. There were 3 copulations we witnessed and 2 times FK. eating meadow vole. 7:42 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box scrapping then to sleep. 8:13 pm. MK. looks in on her 8:15 pm. MK. flies away.

April      3/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:43 am. FK. awake. 6:49 am. FK. in door. 6:54 am. FK. on H.M.K.T. door branch. 6:55 am. FK. flies

to right and sits on nearby tree. 7:07 am. MK. joins FK. on nearby tree. 7:11 am. MK. flies to H.M.K.T. nest box and looks in then sits in H.M.K.T. 7:14 am. MK. flies right and sits with FK. on nearby tree. They both proceeded to sit on nearby trees and in and out of both nest boxes. There were also some copulations and MK. bringing FK. some voles. 8:01 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box and has gone to sleep.

April      4/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:33 am. FK. awake. 6:45 am. FK. in door of H.M.K.T. nest box she was there for 2 minutes and then

FK. is out of nest box and flies to nearby tree where MK. has a vole for her bedtime snack. 8:14 pm. FK. back in H.M.K.T. nest box MK. still on nearby tree. 8:28 pm. FK. asleep and MK. gone.

April      5/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:33 am. awake. 6:40 in door. 6:44 FK. flies to nearby tree and sits with MK. copulation. 7:30 am.

both still in nearby tree. Several other copulations and vole feedings, both sit on nearby hunting perches and in and out of nest boxes throughout the day. 7:00 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box for the night. 7:25 pm. MK. on nearby tree. 7:35 pm. Mk. looks in on FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box and wakes her up the MK. on H.M.K.T. and gone for the night. FK. back to sleep.

April      6/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:35 am. FK. awake and preening. 6:48 am. FK. in door. 6:55 am. Gone from nest box and sits on

nearby tree. 7:25 am. MK. joins FK. on nearby tree.7:50 MK. gone and FK. still on tree. 8:12 am. Both are now gone from research area. MK. & FK.    sat on nearby trees and we gone from area several times today. (very stormy, wind, snow.) they did not enter both nest boxes until 6:58 pm. FK. was in first at this time and quickly went to sleep. 7:36 pm. MK. looks in nest box at FK. and flies to nearby tree. 8:02 pm. MK. on H.M.K.T. FK. goes out of nest box goes to MK. and then flies away. (did MK. bring her food ??) Then both in H.M.K.T. nest box and no squabbling. 8:25 pm. both sleeping. What will happen comes morning ??

April      7/22   FK. and MK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box ( very stormy ). Both in nest box sleeping is very rare !! 6:41 am. FK. out on door branch MK.

still sleeping. 6;46 am. FK. gone MK. still sleeping. MK. awake and preening then back to sleep. 8:10 am. MK. still sleeping in H.M.K.T. nest box FK. on nearby tree hunting. 8:22 am. MK. in door of H.M.K.T. nest box then flies to FK. on nearby tree. Both sitting and hunting in research area all day and evening. 7:52 pm. FK. on H.M.K.T. then enters nest box. 8:18 pm. FK. out of nest box & flies away. 8:21 pm. MK. in H.M.K.T. nest box 8:24 pm. FK. in nest box with MK. just a little chatter and both gone to sleep. NOTE: winds were very high to day with gusts over 65 Km/h.

April      8/22   FK. and MK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. WOW ! 6:28 am. FK in door MK. still sleeping. 6:31 am. FK on door branch MK. awake then

MK. back to sleep. 6:36 am. FK flies to wire left then flies right circles around left and lands on nearby tree. 6:48 am. MK. awake and preening then in door. 6:54 am. MK. on door branch then flies right to hydro wire. 6:56 FK. flies from nearby tree and joins MK. on right hydro wire. Both were on several perches (hunting spots) during the day, also in and out both nest boxes calling and scrapping. Which nest box will it be ?? MK. has been suppling FK. with several voles and then copulating with her several times. When will FK. lay her fist egg? 8:10 pm. MK. in H.M.K.T. nest box calling and then joins FK. on nearby tree. 8:20 pm. MK. back in nest box calling again FK. still on nearby tree. 8:30 pm. FK. enters nest box and MK. begins bowing and calling. Both preen and then to sleep.

April      9/22   FK. and MK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. (This is starting to be a normal activity, how long will it last.) 6:29 am. FK. and MK. awake

looking at each other as to say who is going out first. 6:31 am. MK. in door then on door branch. 6:33 am. FK. in door and out on door branch MK. sits on another H.M.K.T. branch. 6:34 am. Both fly to an nearby tree and sit. 7:01 am. MK. dives at Red Squirrel under H.M.K.T. and then sits on KP #1 and hunts. 7:12 am. MK. in K-2 nest box calling then out and gone from research area. FK. still on nearby tree. FK. and MK. Have been sitting on nearby trees, hydro wires and in and out of both nest boxes. There also were copulations and vole feedings in the research area all day and evening. 8:30 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box then out reacting to geese taking off nearby. Then back into H.M.K.T. nest box. 8:35 pm. Mk. in K-2 nest box calling and then quiet and looking around. 8:40 pm. FK. asleep in H.M.K.T. nest box and MK. in K-2 nest box both are asleep. Will MK. now sleep in K-2 nest box every night, time will tell.

April    10/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. MK. stayed the night in the K-2 nest box. 6:29 am. FK. in door H.M.K.T. nest box MK. still sleeping in

K-2 nest box. 6:32 am. FK. on door branch then flies to nearby hydro wire. MK. now awake and in door of K-2 nest box. 6:36 am. MK. flies to FK. still on wire. 6:41 am. copulation occurs. 6:51 am. FK. now flies and sits on nearby tree MK. gone. 6:55 am. FK. coughs up a pellet. 7:10 am. Both now on nearby tree and 7:17 am. copulation occurs again. 7:27 am. both sit on nearby trees. 8:00 am. went outside to adjust new outside camera. 8:10 am. in and out of K-2 nest box and then sits on nearby tree. Several vole feedings today many copulations and sitting on nearby trees. 10:55 am. another female Kestrel is in the area. Our FK. chases the other female away and is on guard of her nest boxes. MK. was sitting next to foreign female very far away from research area. MK. better not get himself in trouble. The day continues on with hunting, feedings, and in and out both nest boxes. 8:17 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box. 8:30 pm. FK. asleep in H.M.K.T. nest box and MK. asleep in K-2 nest box.

April    11/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. MK. stayed the night in the K-2 nest box. Looks like MK. has his bachelor pad. 6:18 am. both are

awake. 6:20 am. MK. in door K-2 nest box 6:24 am. MK. out K-2 nest box and on nearby tree then FK. in door H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:29 am. FK. flies to MK. on nearby tree. 6:52 am. MK. gone and FK. still on tree. 7:00 am. MK. brings FK. a vole on nearby tree. 7:18 am. both have gone from research area. We are now going to H.M.K.T. nest box and adding another branch for MK. and FK. to sit on. This branch is viewable to the top right on the outside camera. 8;17 am. we are done and house is back in action. MK. and FK. have been doing their usual Kestrel things, perching, hunting, eating, copulating and in and out of both nest boxes. The food (voles) has been plentiful and some storing has occurred. 8:09 pm. MK. brings FK. (she was already asleep in H.M.K.T. nest box) another vole. FK. wakes up and gives MK. a chatter, then he leaves and stores the vole. 8:33 pm. MK. again wakes FK. up she chatters at him. 8:35 pm. MK. is in K-2 nest box and goes to sleep.

April    12/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. MK. stayed the night in the K-2 nest box. 6:09 am. FK. awake MK. still sleeping. 6:19 am. FK. in door

H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:23 am. FK. on H.M.K.T. door branch MK. in door K-2 nest box.6:38 am. Both now sit on hydro wire in research area. 7:08 am. MK. on H.M.K.T. and FK. on nearby tree. ! FK. and MK. have been in research area hunting, perching, and eating. We have seen several voles eaten today and witnessed 6 copulations, this would not include the copulations we have not seen. They have been protecting their nest boxes and diving at (Geese, Red Squirrels, Magpies and any other intruders.)  7:50 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box asleep. 8:17 pm. MK. in K-2 nest box asleep. MAJOR WINTER STORM WARNING FOR OUR AREA !

April    13/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. MK. stayed the night in the K-2 nest box. 4:46 am. the snow has started winds up to 67 Km/h. 6:32 am

both woke up briefly then back to sleep snow accumulation in both nest boxes. 7:08 am. both still in nest boxes. 7:44 am. MK. in door K-2 nest box. FK. still in H.M.K.T. nest box. ( this snow will defiantly slow the mating and egg laying process). 7:45 am. MK. in door K-2 nest box. 7:49 am. MK. out of nest box and in K-2 tree very brief then gone. 8:00 am. FK. still in H.M.K.T. nest box. 8:01 am. FK. in door then out and sits on door branch. 8:03 am. FK. flies right and sits on hydro wire. We did not see FK. and MK. briefly for most of the day due to the high winds and snow. We suspect that they are tucked in a nearby evergreen tree tight to the trunk to get away from the storm. FK. did have a vole at one time that we observed. MK at 8:07 pm. was at H.M.K.T. nest box calling then he flew away. 8:09 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box and has gone to sleep. 8:30 pm. MK. in and out of K-2 nest box and then flies away for the night. This has been the worst acumulation of snow in both nest boxes we have ever witnessed. It’s very possible once the storm is over we might have to remove snow and replace the nesting material.

April    14/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. MK. did not stay in K-2 nest box. 6:42 am. FK. snow covered still sleeping in H.M.K.T. nest box.

Have not seen MK. yet. 7:36 am. FK. wakes up then 7:39 am. back to sleep. 8:10 am. she wakes up again looks around and back to sleep again. 8:42 am. FK. up and shakes off snow and out of H.M.K.T. nest box and sits on door branch. 8;48 am. FK. flies to nearby hydro wire. 8:51 am. MK. lands on nearby tree. 8:59 am. FK. flies to nearby tree MK. has gone from research area. Still storming wind and snow. Both sit on nearby trees all day. 6:57 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box and to sleep. 8:33 pm. MK. looks in on FK. and sits on door branch. 8:38 pm. MK. in K-2 nest box moving around and the to sleep.

April    15/22   FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. MK. stayed the night in the K-2 nest box. 3:29 am. MK. is sleeping on inside door ledge of K-2 nest

box. MK. awake K-2 nest box and on inside ledge looking out. 6:33 am. MK. out of K-2 nest box and sits on nearby tree. FK. still sleeping. 6:39 am. FK. awake briefly then back to sleep. MK. still on nearby tree. 7:02 am. FK. out of H.M.K.T. nest box and sits on door branch MK. still on nearby tree. 7:04 am. FK. flies and sits with MK. on nearby tree. 8:30 am. we went out to clean snow from both nest boxes. 9:40 am. we are finished both nest boxes and waiting for FK. and MK. to return. 3:30 pm. FK. on hydro wire. 5:02 pm. FK. begins to call and goes into mating posture MK. responds and copulation occurs both sit on nearby tree. 5:45 pm. FK. in K-2 nest box scrapping and then out. 5:47 pm. both sit on nearby tree. 6:55 pm. MK. in H.M.K.T. nest box calling then sits on door branch. 6:56 pm. FK. in K-2 nest box preening and then to sleep. 8:48 pm. MK. looks in door of H.M.K.T. nest box calling then he enters the nest box and goes to sleep.

April    16/22   MK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. FK. stayed the night in the K-2 nest box. A switch in sleeping quarters. 6:13 am FK. awake and

preening. 6:21 am. FK. in door K-2 nest box then out and sits on nearby hydro wire. MK. still sleeping. 6:58 am. FK. now on nearby tree. 7:11 am. MK. awake FK. still on nearby tree. 7:15am. MK out of H.M.K.T. nest box and on door branch. 7:18 am. FK flies to FK. on nearby tree. Both hunting on nearby perches some copulations MK. trying to call FK. back to H.M.K.T. nest box several times. 2:07 pm. FK. finally in H.M.K.T. nest box scrapping then sits quiet. Both again hunting from nearby trees, voles are on the menu but today FK. was eating a bird. 8:09 pm. FK. in H.M.K.T. nest box and immediately goes to sleep. 8:41 pm. MK. at H.M.K.T. nest box door and wakes up FK. and she begins to bow MK. sits on door branch. 8:52 pm. MK. in door then in H.M.K.T. nest box with FK. both chatter and bow. Then finally after a little moving around they both cuddle close to each other and go to sleep.  Wondering when eggs with be produced?? Here are some stats from 2014 to 2021 these are based on when both sexes are here. Average to first egg is 28 days, shortest is 20 days and longest is 40 days.

April    17/22   MK. and FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:19 am. FK. awake. 6:20 am. FK. wakes up MK. while heading to door, out and sits on door

branch, then flies to and sits on nearby tree. 6:45 am. FK. still on nearby tree MK. still sleeping. 7:16 am MK. wakes up and in door. 7:22 am. MK. flies to FK. on nearby tree copulation occurs and they both sit. 7:35 am. MK. gone and FK. flies to anther nearby tree. Both spent the day sitting on nearby trees, hydro wires and in and out H.M.K.T. and K-2 nest boxes. More snow and the vole hunting is getting difficult for them. They have been seen swooping at the many birds in our research area and have been successful at times. There have copulations several times.  7:37 pm. FK. in K-2 nest box asleep. 8:35 pm. MK. in H.M.K.T. nest box asleep. Small amounts of snow has accumulated in both nest boxes.

April    18/22   MK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. FK. stayed the night in the K-2 nest box. Still snowing. 6:46 am. FK. in door K-2 nest box MK. still

April    19/22   MK. and FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:20 am. FK. awake and out, sits on door branch. 6:22 am. FK. flies to and sits on hydro wire.

sleeping in H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:48 am.FK. out of nest box and sits on nearby tree. 7:03 am MK. in door of H.M.K.T. nest box 7:05 am. MK. flies to nearby tree with FK. and copulation occurs. During the day they sit on various perches in research area. 10:46 am. FK. in and out K-2 nest box and then both are gone from research area. 4:20 pm. MK. and FK. return to research area. MK. takes a dive at birds. Voles still may be difficult to find. They both continue to hunt in area. Both are in and out of H.M.K.T. nest box. 8:04 pm. MK. in H.M.K.T. nest box and asleep. 8:10 pm. FK. enters H.M.K.T. nest box and chatters at MK. a little shoving, both start to preen and then both asleep.

April    20/22   MK. and FK. stayed the night in the H.M.K.T. nest box. 6:14 am. FK. awake and preening. MK. still sleeping. 6:24 am. FK in door she wakes MK. up

In 2015 there were 4 eggs abandon ( we don't know why ) and they had froze !!! The Kestrels never returned after abandonment. Nature can be beautiful but also harsh.

Will the eggs still be viable ??  These behaviors are unusual according to our many years of research and it will be interesting to see how the season progresses. Congrats Laurie from the USA, she guessed the eggs would hatch today. 2nd egg hatches around 1:57 pm. MK. has been supplying food for FK. and the chicks. Things are getting busy in preparation for our June 11/2022 seminar, so there will be less daily updates until further notice. 3rd. egg hatched around 6:59 pm. 9:26 pm. there are still 3 chicks and 2 eggs. 10:30 pm. FK. on 3 chicks and 2 eggs asleep. the day has started with the same MK. bringing food, chicks eating, all is good. Mk. again reluctant to give up chick and eggs sitting FK. pushes him off. About 12:29 pm. the 4th egg has hatched 1 more to go. MK. has been providing food to FK. the 4 chicks are doing well and have a healthy appetite. MK. has also been keeping 4 chicks warm. All are doing great !! The 5th egg  which was the last egg laid has not hatched yet.

FK. has been out of the nest box for quick stretches and fly abouts with MK. taking over nest duties several times today. 10:30 pm. finally the day draws to a close and FK. and 4 chicks go to sleep. The 5th and last egg laid has not hatched. We think this extremely large 5th egg may be non viable. Time will tell !!

He has even been delivering food right inti the nest box again (skip the dishes). Fk. has been taking some breaks all day out of the nest box for stretching and fly abouts, she has been out of the nest more often as the warmer weather has arrived. 7:18 pm. FK. came inside nest box with a bird and plucked it, what a mess feathers every where. The chicks will have a nice feather bed for tonight.  8:07 pm MK. in with 5 chicks. 9:35 pm. MK. yet with another vole and brings it inside nest box to give to FK. what a great dad. 10:00 pm FK. standing over 5 chicks, they are growing so so fast FK. is having trouble covering them all.

The weather has warmed up and the 5 chicks are older now and can stand being alone for longer periods of time, although MK. and FK. are very near guarding the nest box. Several feedings today mostly voles and some birds. The 5 chicks are standing up on their own now and a little moving about within the nest box.

Again today much the same, MK’s food deliveries, feedings and chicks growing and getting stronger. FK has also been out of the nest box more often and for longer periods of time and she has been bug which has started today which seems to get the 5 chicks really excited. The nest box is getting quite littered with pellets and poop from the 5 nestling's. No one has hit the cameras, YET !!

Our seminar was a great success !! Rusty the Long-eared Owl was her Deva self and enjoyed meeting all 25 attendees. Kim Bisson (Nu-Sun Cinema) and Dr. James Duncan (Discover Owls) seminars were enjoyed by all.

We raised $560.00 for Discover Owls ongoing research, conservation of owls all over the world.

The day went as expected of the 5 chicks, several feedings, sleeping and pooping. What a great life. Both MK. and FK. again are hunting to supply the rapidly growing chicks whom are starting to be more mobile in there nest box habitat. The 5 chicks are being left alone in the nest box more often now, but rest assure MK. and FK. are nearby protecting their nest box. 10:30 pm FK. finally in for the night. Our next project will be the banding of the fab 5 (nestling's). This is scheduled for June 20 /2022. If you are watching our live stream you will notice the side and top cameras are getting hit by the chicks projectile pooping. We will be cleaning the cameras approximately every 3 to 4 days as not to disturb the chicks and FK. and MK. frequently. Once the chicks are around 23 days old we will NOT be cleaning the cameras any more. This is to not initiate a premature fledge.

There were 17 vole deliveries and assorted bugs.Chicks are growing at a alarming rate. The last feeding at 9:21 pm. then FK. gone for the night. 10:07 5 chicks sleeping.

6:03 am. FK. in with vole, feed time. 6:10 am. FK. out on door branch then gone. One of the chicks has broken away from the pile and is sleeping with head tucked into back like an adult does. Both MK. and FK. have been supplying food for the chicks. 17 voles today and assorted insects. One of the chicks also swallowed a whole vole today. More voles being left inside nest box for the chicks to learn to rip them apart.

feeding time. 5:10 am. FK. out on door branch MK. still on hydro wire. 5:12 am. FK. and MK. gone. 5 chicks are starting to sit in different places in nest box not all together. 5:37 am. FK on nearby hydro wire and MK. in nearby tree. 6:42 FK. in checking on chicks. 7:25 am. were are heading out to clean the cameras. 7:37 am. cameras cleaned, FK. has been watching us the whole time with a vole in her talons. 7:40 am FK. in nest box with vole, feeding time. How long will the cameras stay clean ??  The cameras have stayed clean all day and evening due to the chick pack has moved in front of the side camera. 20 voles and 7 bugs today.

FK. in and out chick check. 6:06 FK. in with small piece of food. 6:17 am MK. in with vole chicks takes it and he is out and gone. 6:22 am FK. in and takes vole from chick and feeds everyone. 7:31 am. MK. in chick check. 7:48 am FK. in door with bug. 8:17 am. we are out cleaning cameras. 8:30 am. we are done 13 minutes to clean. All is well, chicks are Gular fluttering (this is a beak open and movement of the throat to increase air flow over the mouth).  One of the chicks has been trying to jump to the ledge under the door opening. Soon they will be all taking a turn to look out at the new world. They taking the heat well. Again FK. and MK. are keeping a steady flow of food to the 5 chicks which provides them moisture. Todays food count is 14 voles and 58 bugs. the grubs are an excellent means of moisture.

JUNE  21/22  5 banded chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. 5:47 am. FK. in with vole feeding time then gone. 6:22 am. FK. in with vole. 7:05 am. FK. in

again another vole. Again several feeding today, 5 chicks are growing rapidly. Both FK. and MK. providing food for all. 8:40 FK. drops off a vole and chicks are eating their bed time snack. 16 voles and 2 insects today. Insects were slow today due to all the rain. Cooler temperatures gave the chicks a more comfortable temperature in the nest box. They are all doing well and soon with be taking turns looking out the door.

6:45 another vole drop off chicks again ripping at it. 7:20 am. FK. in and takes vole from chick and feeds everyone. 8:00 am. we are heady out to do the banding. 8:29 am. all 5 chicks banded and back in nest box. Banding went great !!!  3 males 2 females. We now took the times to educate all that were present at the banding. 9:20 am FK. in with bug and out. Again MK. and FK. have been suppling numerous voles and insects all day and evening. 12 voles and 5 insects. MK. delivers a vole to the 5 chicks then gone. FK. has to push JFK. out of door way to deliver vole and feed all. There were several times today that the chicks were in door ranging from 6 minutes to 12 minutes. MK. and FK. were providing food all day to the hungry growing chicks in-spite of the heavy rain. Due to the rain our blind is flooded.

JFK. in door FK. arrives with vole and pushes her way into door FK. drops vole and leaves. The oldest JFK. is in the door frequently (longest time 36 minutes) and we suspect she will be the 1st to fledge. One of the males is also been in the door a few times. MK. and FK. are providing food to the 5 all day and into the evening. 8:04 pm. FK. lands on H.M.K.T. and again has to push her way past JFK. in door. FK. feeds all 5 chicks and gone. Todays food count 16 voles and 4 insects.

JUNE  26/22  5 banded chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. Updates will be starting to shorten. The 5 nestling's are spending more time in the door

JUNE  27/22  5 banded chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. 5:59 am. food deliveries have started already. 6:23 am. gone out to blind to film. The

everyday. Todays total time in the door by several nestling's from 8:58 am. to 7:59 pm. is approximately 3 hours 35 minutes. FK. and MK. having to push junior K’s out of door for food deliveries several times. 11 voles and 5 insects today.

nestling's have spent approximately 458 minutes (7.6 hours) in the door today. The start of fledge is very near. We will be spending more time in the blind filming. 9 voles today and bugs ??

JUNE  28/22  5 banded chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. 5:01 am. FK. on nearby hydro line and coughed up a pellet. Sun rise this morning reflecting

off clouds behind H.M.K.T. nest box nature is simply amazing. 5:28 am. FK. vole drop off. 6:20 am. gone out to blind. The 5 nestling's are flapping up a storm in the nest box and again spending time in the door. MK. and FK. are making food deliveries. 15 voles and 7 insects. Will they every leave ?

JUNE  29/22  5 banded chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. they are all sleeping like the adults now. 5:37 am. JFK.(oldest) in door. 5:46 am. FK. on nearby hydro

Oldest female fledges. She jumped onto the door branch at 5:49 pm. and roamed around the H.M.K.T. and had 3 poops until 6:43 pm. then returned back into the nest box because it started to rain.

JUNE  30/22  5 banded chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. The oldest female had here 1st flight today, she flew with great control to a nearby tree. Later she flew

wire. 6:12 am. MK. vole drop off. 6:35 am. we are in the blind.  Several feedings today with FK. and MK. guarding the nest box from grackles, crows, blackbirds and magpies. 15 voles and some insects.

JULY  01/22   4 banded chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. The oldest female has roosted elsewhere for the night. 5:27 am. FK. on nearby hydro wire. 6:06 am.

back to the nest box and perched on different branches on the H.M.K.T. and danced on the nest box roof she continued to enter and exit the nest box several times. MK. and FK. continue to deliver assorted food to all nestling's. 11:12 am. the 2nd female fledged and perched around the H.M.K.T. with her sibling sister while the males nestling watched them fro the door. About 11:54 am. it started raining so the 2 JFK fledges returned inside the nest box. We were in the blind again today filming.  11 voles and and a few insects. FK. and MK. taking turns staying very close to nest box guarding the new fledges. Our 1st JFK. fledge stayed on nest box roof until 7:27 pm. and then flew to roost elsewhere for the night. 10:15 pm. 1 JFK and 3 JMK’s sleeping in nest box.

JULY  02/22   3 banded male chicks stayed the night in H.M.K.T. The 2 females have roosted elsewhere for the night. 7:14 am. We are in blind. 7:26 am. JMK #1

JMK #1 in door. 6:16 am. JMK #1 fledge and sits on door branch then jumping, flapping on H.M.K.T. 6:20 am. we are in blind. 7:46 am. JFK #1 flies to nearby tree. JFK #2 flies to nearby hydro wire and is joined by MK. The other 2 JMK’s in nest box in and out of door all day and eve. JMK. returns to H.M.K.T. and enters nest box (back home). 6 vole deliveries into nest box today. MK. and FK. are guarding the other fledglings and feeding them. We suspect they are in large tress in the area, but hard to see with all the leaf growth. 10:09 pm. 3 JMK’s asleep in nest box. 6 voles to nest box today.

JULY  03/22   1 banded male chick stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest boxThe 2 females and 2 males have roosted elsewhere for the night. 5:20 am. we are in blind

official fledge flight. 8:17 am. JMK #2 in door and fledge flies out to nearby tree, did not sit on H.M.K.T. All flegdes are sitting on nearby tree and are getting food deliveries from FK. and MK. 8 voles and 1 bird today this what we have seen. There might have been more food delivered but trees are thick with leaves and hard to spot everything that goes on. The fledges are flying well and some distances.

5:27 FK. flying from nearby trees to nearby trees keeping watch on the 4 fledges. It has been raining off and on all morning. 7:04 am. FK. delivers vole to JMK. in nest box and sits on door branch other fledges on nearby trees. 8:34 am. FK. delivers another vole to JMK. in nest box. 8:44am. JMK out of nest box and on door branch flapping wings. 8:49 am. JMK flies to another branch on H.M.K.T. but misses a landing then we did not see where he went. 9:15 am. FK. and other fledges on nearby trees and we are in from the blind. Now the empty nest box syndrome. Vole left in nest box. 11:29 am. the last fledged JMK. #3 that missed his landing was on the ground and now managed to flap and crawl up the H.M.K.T. and do some hopping around and wing exercises. 12:25 pm. FK. lands beside JMK. on H.M.K.T. and temping him with a bird kill. FK. would not give JMK. #3 the kill and kept on flying up with it. 12:42 JMK. #3 on nest box roof running around, then finally flies to highest branch on H.M.K.T. and has a successful strong flight to a nearby tree. FK. and MK. looked in nest box several times with food, just to make sure no nestling's were still inside. They have been suppling all fledges with food and guarding the area diligently. We will be watching our 5 fledges to see how they progress with their Kestrel skills and wounder if they will return to the H.M.K.T. to socialize as a family group. It will be strange for us not to see our Kestrel Kids in the nest box but great to see them soaring in the sky's. Stay tuned to our live stream it will end on about July 8-9/2022 unless the 5 nestling's come back to roost on the H.M.K.T. In the near future we will post some video and photos of the fledges. JMK. on KP #2. 8:17 FK. in and out of nest box and sits on door branch MK. arrives and gives her a vole, JMK. on KP #2 flies and follows FK. to near by tree for a vole meal MK. sits on KP #4.  8:38 pm. JFK. lands on outside camera roof. 8:40 pm. JFK. lands on H.M.K.T. then on roof of nest box. 8:43 JFK. takes a piece of vole from JMK. whom is on wheel house and goes to roof of nest box to eat. 8:50 pm. JFK. on H.M.K.T. then gone . We have seen many times JK’s several times today sitting in different locations hard to tell if we have seen all 5 unless we see them all at once. FK. and MK. sitting in different locations hunting, feeding and guarding. Seems like the JK’s are coming back to the H.M.K.T. to roost and have roof parties.

poles FK on nearby hydro wire. 6:25 am. several JK’s sitting on KP poles and H.M.K.T. 9:00 am. we are in blind. They day was busy for the JK’s with perching and flying in the area. MK. and FK. have a job of feeding and protecting. The evening was very busy with the JK’s. 8:47 nobody in sight. We have seen all 5 fledges today all are doing well.

JULY  06/22   No nestling's / fledges stayed the night in H.M.K.T. 5:20 am. out in blind. 6:00 am. very little action this morning. 6:09 am. JMK. chases 2 grackles

JULY  07/22   No nestling's / fledges stayed the night in H.M.K.T. 5:04 am. FK. on nearby hydro wire. 5:36 2 JK’s on H.M.K.T. and we are out in blind. The 5 fledges

from H.M.K.T. and sits on wheel house, he is protecting his birth place. 9:15 am. we are out of blind, not much to film this morning. 11:01 am. MK.  FK. and the 5 fledges started to fly around and hunt in the area. Voles have been constantly supplied to the JK’s. In the evening the JK’s were in a frenzy with FK. and MK. insect feeding. JK’s were sitting on outside camera box, H.M.K.T. and KP poles. this lasted till about 9:07 pm. 9:09 pm. no K’s in sight. Everyone at their night roosts.

are doing fine and starting to fly like adults. They are perching on different locations in our research area, learning to hunt for insects and continue to congregate in a family unit. FK. and MK. have been keeping busy with feeding and protecting their family. Fledges flying strength has improved greatly with now soaring and an ability to fly carrying a vole. To watch the fledges actions is gratifying to say the least. We have witnessed all 5 fledges at once, so all are well at this point. Our live stream will end on July 9 / 2022 at midnight.

JMK. on H.M.K.T. briefly and gone. 9:15 am. we are out of blind. We have ventured out side all day and evening and have seen no Kestrels at all Have the family moved on ?? Tomorrow we will watch and see!!

6:20 am. MK. on H.M.K.T/. very brief. 8:10 am. MK. on H.M.K.T. 8:13 am. FK. on H.M.K.T. Very difficult to ID them if they are indeed our FK. and MK. We have witnessed other families passing through our research area after our family has gone in previous years. There were another FK. and MK. here earlier in the season but were chased away by our FK. and MK.

JULY  12/22   No nestling's / fledges stayed the night in H.M.K.T.  FK. and MK. we have been seeing very briefly maybe our FK. and MK. but also maybe another

pair. 6:11 am. FK. on H.M.K.T. 6:17 am. FK. flies to far right. 10:51 am. FK. looks in H.M.K.T. nest box and calls and then sits on door branch. 11:16 am. FK. on KP #4 hunting. 11:29 am. JFK. (oldest fledge)on property marker branch then on KP #4 she is hunting. 11:36 am. JFK. gets a insect on her own, then back to KP #4. 11:48 am. JFK. on H.M.K.T. then on wheel house. 2:44 pm. FK. on KP #4 down and gets a insect and flies to H.M.K.T. and delivers it to JFK. 2:52 pm. FK. attacks crow in research area about 170 feet away. JFK. now hunting on KP #2, dives down and gets an insect then back up to KP #2 and eats it. (she is learning not to stay on the ground with her kill, this is very dangerous). 3:45 pm. FK. on H.M.K.T. 5:02 pm. FK. on wheel house on H.M.K.T. 6:38 pm. FK. on H.M.K.T.  We had not seen any fledges for days and If this keeps up we will return to the blind !!!

JULY  14/22   No nestling's / fledges stayed the night in H.M.K.T. nest box. We have been monitoring our research area today and have seen no Kestrels.

branch. 11:25 am. JFK. on KP #4 hunting. 11:37 am. JFK. flies to H.M.K.T. the flies away. 12:05 pm. MK. on H.M.K.T. then flies away. 1:05 pm. FK. on wheel house then flies away. We did not see any K’s for the remainder of the day and evening.

JULY  15/22   7:01 am. ?MK. on H.M.K.T.  7:44 am. ?MK. on H.M.K.T. At 11:35 am. the K family started to arrive. MK., FK., and all 5 fledges gave quite a show today

JULY  16/22   Well it 3:56 pm. and we have seen no K’s yet, from feast to famine. What will happen this evening ?? 5:32 pm. FK. on H.M.K.T. wheel house brief.

the action was none stop. All were hunting, flying, entering the H.M.K.T. nest box and having roof parties. Hunting took place from the H.M.K.T., outside camera box and all the KP’s. Could not keep up with our notes. FK. and MK. were also feeding the JK’s. This unbelievable circus of events went on until 9:02 pm. then all were gone. There were 3 of the JK’s in the nest box at once. The temperature is about out 28 Celsius which we think makes them more active. We have seen all 5 at once and they are doing well and their hunting skills are well developed.  Looks like we will be in the blind tomorrow, hoping to capture more video.

JULY  17/22    7:47 am MK. on H.M.K.T. 9:00am. FK. hover hunting the sits on far hydro wire. 9:32 FK. hover hunting over near by yard. 9:51 3 JK’s flying around

FK. on H.M.K.T. then looks in nest box calling then MK. lands on H.M.K.T. with a insect eats it then both fly away. 1:17 pm. MK. in H.M.K.T. nest box then sits on H.M.K.T. and gone. We did not see any K’s for the rest of the day and evening. NOTE: our Male Flicker has stayed the last 2 nights in the K-2 nest box, this occurrence seems to happen every year around this time.

JULY  20/22    No its not the end !!!! 7:09 am. MK. on H.M.K.T. and in nest box, he was soak-en wet from all the rain. Then at 7:24 am. the Kestrel Kids show

started again they were flying, hunting from several perches. 2 also teaming up and chased a Magpie all over the area. They were entering the nest box and removing pellets and taking them to the roof of the H.M.K.T. nest box and ripping them apart. 8:17 am. all were gone from the research area. 9:16 am. 2 JMK’s on H.M.K.T. and in nest box. 10:36 am. 2 JMK’s on H.M.K.T. 10:52 am. 2 JMK’s and 1 JFK. on H.M.K.T. 1 of the JMK’s hovered hunted for a brief moment.

JULY  21/22    We will try to be out in the blind today. 4:21 pm. ?MK. in and out of H.M.K.T. nest box then sits on door branch and then another branch on the

H.M.K.T. at 4:44 pm ?MK. flies away to the right. Our blind excursion was non profitable today.

JULY  22/22     7:54 am. JMK. lands on KP #4. 9;50 am. Kestrel flies over head, no ID. 11:20 am. ?FK. and ?MK. on H.M.K.T. 1:20 pm. ?MK. gone and FK. flies away

JULY  23/22     6:50 am. ?MK. on H.M.K.T. 7:09 am. ?MK. flies away. 7:45 pm. FK.on KP #4 then flies to far hydro wire. 8:11 pm. JMK looks in H.M.K.T. nest box 

then sits on H.M.K.T. and KP #2 and 4 flying around an sitting in different perches. 8:22 pm. JFK. flies away.

JULY  24/22     6:31 am. ?K chasing crows and magpie from bird feeder and nearby tree. 6:51 am. ?K in nearby tree. 7:08 am. JMK. flying and perching on several 

places in research area. 7:30 am. JMK. gone from research area. 2:34 pm. ?JMK. on H.M.K.T. then flies right. 3:04 ?JMK. om KP #4. The reason we have a ? before some of the JK’s is that the light is poor and we could not verify no band or have band.

JULY  25/22     We have been out of the research area from 8:30 am. to 2:30 pm. before and after these times we have seen no K’s

JULY  26/22     7:29 am. ?MK. on H.M.K.T. then in nest box and on wheel house. 7:46 am. ?MK. gone. We have seen no K’s for the rest of the day.

JULY  27/22    11:11 am. MK. om H.M.K.T. 12:49 pm. ?JMK. and ?FK. on H.M.K.T. no bands. 4:24 pm. ?JMK. in H.M.K.T. nest box then on H.M.K.T. until 5:06 pm.

16:19 pm. ?MK. in H.M.K.T. nest box. then on H.M.K.T. 7:32 pm. ?MK. on H.M.K.T. and ?JMK. on KP #4. 8:10 pm. ?JMK. on H.M.K.T. 8:36 pm. ?MK. on H.M.K.T. Again the JK’s we are seeing do not have a band, so the ? mark in front of the JMK. or MK. This means we are not sure if these are our K’s or even that these are not JK.’s or adults.

JULY  28/22     5:57 am. ?MK. on wheel house and ?FK. on nearby hydro wire. 6:05 am. Both on H.M.K.T. 6:06 am. ?MK. gone and ?FK. on wheel house. 6:11 am.

3 juvenile crows land and H.M.K.T. and ?FK. flies away. 6:25 am. ?FK. on wheel house. ?FK. gone. 6:39 am. ?FK. on H.M.K.T. 6:45 am. ?FK. looks in H.M.K.T. nest box. 7:23 am. ?FK. on H.M.K.T. and wheel house. 7:45 ?FK. gone from research area. We see no bands today, but hard to tell if this our FK. or a foreign adult or juvenile. We will continue to post updates !!

Looks like our Kestrel season has ended. We may see the odd Kestrel passing through during migration. We will still do updates if Kestrels are here.
